Kevin McCloud invited us to propose a design for Barkitecture – a centrepiece of Goodwood’s inaugural dog-focussed addition to the world-famous calendar of events at the Sussex estate.

The Barkitecture brief requested a novel architectural alternative to the traditional kennel, and our design was selected to join proposals from a veritable Who’s Who of Britain’s leading architects and designers.  With a budget of £250 to build with, the doghouses were auctioned by Bonham’s, with all proceeds supporting The Dog’s Trust animal charity.

Our entry 101 Dowels in Motion was a monochrome design inspired by the simplicity and elegance of traditional Welsh stick-back chairs, while giving a playful nod to the legendary canine movie.  Barkitecture was a light-hearted affair and not to be taken too seriously, but we were flattered to be one of the eight studios positioned in the main space alongside Pritsker and Stirling prize winning architects (Foster, Rogers, Hopkins and Stanton Williams), as well as Apple’s Jony Ive, Marc Newson and Viscount Linley.

Our entry raised £1000 in the Bonham’s charity auction. It was a wonderful and enjoyable experience, although we currently have no plans to give up the day job of designing for humans.
