A planning application has been submitted to Monmouthshire County Council for Coleg Gwent’s new catering school which will feature two public restaurants and a deli. The design approach is one of creative reuse – adapting a fine Arts & Crafts era barn, The 1917 Building, at the Usk campus into an inspiring learning environment and welcoming venue for diners. The scheme was developed in close collaboration with Coleg Gwent’s curriculum leaders and will encourage a fresh approach to training young talent in all aspects of food.
A series of dramatic interiors are revealed through the strategic removal of carefully targeted internal structure and the glazing of the barn’s large and varied openings. The introduction of a new link building unlocks the constraints of the original building plan, creating the flexibility required of a 21st Century multi-purpose facility.
